If you’re planning a group outing for an area somewhere north of Boston, MA, you have literally tons of great choices available to you as a destination. The specific destination you choose will, of course, depend on the kind of outing you’re arranging, and the preferences of the individuals involved. Assuming that everyone in your group is fairly mobile, and is generally interested in the state of Massachusetts, some wonderful possibilities can be contemplated. To narrow down the choices, we’ve chosen one whole city which is rich in history, Salem, MA, one fantastic luxury resort, the Omni Mount Washington Resort, and one historic lighthouse, the Baker Island Light Station.

Omni Mount Washington Resort

This luxurious resort is located in Bretton Woods, NH, and it has long been a haven for sophisticated travelers such as celebrities, poets, and even presidents. You’ll be dazzled by the elegant decor, the charming music, and the gourmet meals which are served up by one of the region’s great chefs. The dining facility itself is a marvel, and when you’re not enjoying a sumptuous meal, you’ll be able to take advantage of nearby recreational opportunities like the nine zip-line facilities, a world-class golf course designed by Donald Ross, or possibly the relaxing and soothing in-house spa which so many patrons adore.

Salem, MA

Salem is one of the most renowned, and somewhat infamous locations in the entire state, with a rich history that dates back to colonial times. You will of course be able to tour the well-known Witch Village and the Salem Witch Museum, which commemorate the events which took place in the early days of the state, when less enlightened attitudes prevailed. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem is well known to art lovers as one of the most respected art museums on the East Coast, and is well worth a few hours of visiting time. You might also want to view the House of the Seven Gables, immortalized by author Nathaniel Hawthorne in his novel of the same name. Ocean lovers will appreciate the Salem High-Speed Ferry, which transports travelers between Boston and Salem in less than 60 minutes, taking in some beautiful scenery along the way.

Baker Island Light Station

One of the oldest lighthouses on the New England coast, this historic lighthouse was first occupied in 1660 at the mouth of Salem Harbor. During the 1670’s, the island where the lighthouse is situated was rented to John Turner, the builder of the House of Seven Gables. Today, the island is inhabited by only the lighthouse operator during winter, with a seasonal population on hand at other times. The island itself is closed to the public, but boat tours can be arranged, which pass directly by this fantastic reminder of the state’s early days. For those wishing to view the lighthouse from solid ground, it can be viewed from Chandler Hovey Park on Marblehead Neck, from Winter Island in Salem, and from Salem Willows Park in Salem.
